Workshops are held in the artist’s studio in the West Carroll Art Studios, at Kedzie and Carroll, in Chicago. All supplies, tools and equipment are provided. One of my goals is to provide each participant with a personal and supportive experience in a stimulating environment where discussion and experimentation are welcome. Ahavani Mullen Workshops
Painting from the Ground Up -
An Intro to Encaustic Painting

$140

Saturday Sept. 16, 10am - 4pm

In this workshop we will use pigmented molten beeswax to create a luminous, richly layered surface with depth and texture. This workshop is designed to offer instruction and guidance to beginners to encaustic with a comprehensive introduction to this ancient medium. Artists who work in any medium may find encaustic a great addition to their visual vocabulary.

Students will be guided step by step through building an encaustic panel, as we cover a wide variety of techniques, which can ultimately be combined to develop each artist's own visual language. Topics we examine are:

Composition of encaustic paint

Studio setup and equipment

Choosing proper substrates

Safety, ventilation, working temperatures

Tools and tips for heating and fusing using heat guns and irons

A few of the techniques we will cover include:

Image transfers

Masks and incising

Accretion

Encaustic monotypes

This workshop includes demonstrations of various encaustic techniques, alternated with time for hands-on individual work.

We will include informal group observations of our artwork, in addition to individual discussions of the work at the end of the day.

Examples of material we may cover include:

-Layering translucent colors to create depth

-Combining oil and encaustic

-Bringing forward light in the picture plane

-Creating texture and impressions

These sessions provide the kind of support, guidance and collaboration needed through one-on-one instruction and coaching. Whether it is targeted at a specific piece of work already in progress or in developing a new project, I'm happy to discuss these needs in advance with you so we can tailor a session(s) to suit your specific needs.

Testimonials

I am very grateful to my students who have offered these kind words about their experiences in my workshops:

I very much enjoyed learning encaustic from Ahavani! She knows her craft well, is a clear and thorough instructor, and after just two days I feel confident to set up my own encaustic studio and start creating. I work as an artist and this instruction will definitely help me take my art to the next level! Mahalo!"

"I was asked by a friend to join her for a 2 day encaustic class (not knowing what I was getting myself into). I wish I would have taken it sooner! Encaustic paining is a very interesting medium with so many possibilities! Ahavani was a great teacher who introduced us to the basics while providing a solid idea of some of the different techniques that are possible. I finished the class with some pieces that I'm proud of, and a taste for more." -Carmen S.

"Thank you so much for the wonderful workshop! Encaustic has been something that I’ve wanted to try for quite a while. You explained everything so clearly and being surrounded by your art was very inspiring.   I’m so excited about this new media that I’ve taken the plunge and purchased skillets and am expecting a delivery any day now. I’m going to try to set up and I'll keep you posted! Thank you again for all your help. I would love to work with you again some day. Best, Ruth"

"Thank you so much for the fabulous encaustic art workshop. I had so much fun and feel like I am starting to break through my creative block." -H.M.

"I truly loved the class..you were terrific. Thanks for all of the info!" -E.L.

"This is the second workshop that I've done with Ahavani and once again it was brilliant!  While packed with all of the technical information you need to make successful and stable work, Ahavani also encourages personal vision and exploration so you don't go home with "cookie cutter" pieces like so many other places." - Kelly Matthews
